This October, we’re diving into a must-read for anyone who wants to make a lasting impact in the nonprofit sector without sacrificing personal well-being: The Happy, Healthy Nonprofit: Strategies for Impact Without Burnout. Written by two renowned experts, Beth Kanter and Aliza Sherman, this book is packed with practical strategies for achieving sustainable success.

What You’ll Learn in October’s Book:
The Happy, Healthy Nonprofit addresses one of the biggest issues in our field—burnout. This book explores how the culture of overwork affects nonprofit professionals and offers actionable advice on how to avoid the pitfalls of burnout while still leading effectively. Through real-life examples and research-backed strategies, you’ll discover how to:

  • Recognize and Break Free from the “Sacrifice Syndrome”: Understand how the culture of self-sacrifice leads to burnout and diminished effectiveness.
  • Implement Self-Care and Resilience Practices: Learn strategies for maintaining your energy and enthusiasm, even in high-pressure environments.
  • Create Healthier Organizational Cultures: Explore how leaders can model well-being, set boundaries, and create a supportive work culture for their teams.
  • Leverage Technology for Balance: Use digital tools mindfully to enhance productivity without overwhelming yourself.

By reading and discussing this book together, we’ll explore ways to build stronger, healthier nonprofits—both for ourselves and our teams. Each week, we’ll focus on specific sections of the book, and I’ll provide a weekly reading guide to help you dive deeper into the topics and reflect on how they apply to your work.

October’s Reading Schedule:

  • Week 1 (Oct 1 – Oct 7): Introduction & Chapters 1-2
  • Week 2 (Oct 8 – Oct 14): Chapters 3-5
  • Week 3 (Oct 15 – Oct 21): Chapters 6-8
  • Week 4 (Oct 22 – Oct 29): Chapters 9-Conclusion

We’ll wrap up October’s book with a special Zoom session on Saturday, November 2nd at 12:00 PM, where we’ll reflect on the lessons learned and discuss how to implement these strategies in our daily lives.
